Stop Destruction of Arab homes
in Jerusalem
|
The
Municipality of Jerusalem recently announce its intentions to
demolish an
entire East Jerusalem neighborhood -- 88 homes housing 1,000
residents -- in Silwan village, near the Old City. The reason, according
to the City Engineer, Uri Shitreet, who issued the orders, is that this
area is an important cultural and historical site for the Jewish nation
because it stands on the site where King David established his kingdom.
The aim, says Shitreet, is to return this densely-populated Palestinian
part of the city "to its landscape of yore." This is the largest
demolition of Palestinian homes in Jerusalem since 1967. The houses are
built on private land belonging to Silwan villagers. The first forty
houses have already received demolition orders.
Thus far, no American politicians have intervened to try to stop
these massive demolitions. Help us push American representatives to
respond swiftly. As the underwriters of Israel's occupation of
Palestinian lands, pressure from American representatives can change the
reality on the ground.
FYI, since 1967 American-built caterpillar bulldozers have been
used to story more than 12000 Arab homes..

Sample letter to your elected official
Dear Congressman:
I'm writing to request that you help stop the demolition of
nearly 90 homes built on private property in East Jerusalem. Nearly 1000 people
will be affected by the demolition of these homes by the Israeli government. The
Jerusalem city engineer, Uri Shitreet, who issued the orders said that this area
is an important cultural and historical site for the Jewish nation because it
stands on the site where King David established his kingdom.
But I believe that the human beings currently living in
their homes are far more important than a kingdom that no longer exists. In
Jerusalem, Palestinians make up one-third of the city's population. These
demolitions will tremendously affect that community and make it impossible for
Jews and Palestinians to live side by side in peace.
Please show your support for peace by opposing these
demolitions.
Sincerely,
Your name
