For Immediate Release

AAF to Coordinate Model Arab League workshops at NJ colleges and high schools

(Paterson, NJ) February 1, 2007

Contact, Aref Assaf  973-960-2673

The American Arab Forum is pleased to announce that, as part of its core mission, it has concluded an agreement with the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations, (NCUSAR) to lead the effort to conduct workshops emulating the real-life issues facing the 22 member states of the Arab League. AAF will work with a regional director of NCUSAR to promote and conduct the events at select colleges and high schools in New Jersey.

The Model Arab League, MAL,  has attracted over 25,000 students since its inception in 1983. The AAF's sponsored workshops will signal the first time the model has been available to NJ college students.

Participants will gain immeasurable firsthand leadership experience and hands-on training.  They will attain  this through the Model's constant challenges and interaction in the course of public discussion, the application of time management skills, the use of parliamentary procedure, and the dynamics of debating, writing, and editing.  All this occurs under pressure and tight deadlines that mirror the actual realities and tensions inherent in the give-and-take that comes with activism in public affairs.   Successful students will receive special certificates from NCUSAR.

Aref Assaf, PhD, president of American Arab Forum, expressed  his enthusiasm and support for bringing  the Model to New Jersey. "We hope that such efforts will offer students an unsurpassed opportunity to attain and harness practical leadership skills intimately connected to the US and the Arab world." He further stated that," Such a real-life simulation of challenging issues will encourage deeper appreciation for the intricacies of world affairs and the need to equip oneself with vast amounts of knowledge about the issues."

The American Arab Forum is a non profit tax exempt think-tank organization based in Paterson, NJ. Visit our website to learn more about work. www.aafusa.org. If you are interested in hosting or participating in the MAL at your college, please contact us.
